Former Abbotsford Canucks and Syracuse Crunch defenseman Quinn Schmiemann has signed a one-year contract with HK Dukla Trencin in Slovakia, the team announced Wednesday.

A product of Wilcox, Sask., Schmiemann split time between the Canucks and Crunch last season. In 25 games for Abbotsford, he had one goal and five assists for six points. With Syracuse, Schmiemann had two points in 11 regular season games.

Drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Schmiemann never signed with the organization. Since turning pro in 2022-23, he has attended 67 AHL regular season games and also spent time in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings.

With Schmiemann traveling abroad for the first time, he will have the opportunity to see consistent ice times with HK Dukla Trencin. While he hasn’t been able to find consistent offensive production at the professional level, Schmiemann has had success in the WHL and could position himself for an AHL contract next year if all goes well.
