Newly signed winger Daniel Sprong is excited to join the Vancouver Canucks organization and hopes he can stay long-term.

Since 2019, Sprong has played for the Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitals, Seattle Kraken and most recently the Detroit Red Wings. Last season, Sprong played a career-high 76 games, scoring 18 goals and 25 assists.

“I’m a high-scoring winger, but I know I have some things to work on, and we talked about that and how they’re going to help me,” Sporng told Canucks media on Monday. Going into camp, I think I have an idea of where they see me, but I’m going to have to play the right way and produce when I get the opportunity.”

Sprong was a productive scorer the past two seasons, scoring 18 goals in 23-24 and 21 goals in 66 games for the Kraken the season before. Despite his recent scoring record, Sprong hasn’t found a place to sing for long.

“I hope Vancouver isn’t just a one-year thing,” Sprong said. “That’s something [we talked about], and I can see myself there for the long term. That’s really what excited me.”

Canucks coach Rick Tocchet won the Jack Adams Trophy last season, and Sprong told reporters that his conversations with the bench boss influenced his decision to sign.

Sprong went on to mention that playing with the Canucks core of Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson allows him to fill something the lineup is lacking.

“It’s a great group. [You’ve got a] the first three defenders at the rear with Hughes. A top-five goaltender, Thatcher Demko, and just the guys around that with Patterson, Miller and Boeser had a great year last year,” Sprong said. “When I talked to the head coach, we talked about those things and the opportunity, and that’s what really excited me to go there.”

Sprong signed a one-year contract with a cap hit of $975,000. While he wants to stay in Vancouver for the long haul, he needs to win it over with a proven deal.
