On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers signed Travis Konecny to an eight-year extension worth $8.75 million annually:

The 27-year-old forward had an impressive 2023-24 season, scoring a career-high 33 goals and 35 assists for 687 points, leading the NHL with six shorthanded goals, one ahead of Islanders forward Simon Holmstrom.

Coincidentally, his stat line is exactly the same as his cousin Bo Horvat presented in 2023-24 – exactly the same.

The 29-year-old center signed his mega-contract with the New York Islanders on February 5, 2023, putting pen to paper on an eight-year contract worth $8.5 million annually following a career-high 38-goal, 32-assist season.

Horvat and Konecny are second cousins, both growing up in the London, Ontario area.

The two trained together in the summer, but due to their two-year age difference, they did not face each other until juniors, with Horvat playing for his hometown London Knights while Konecny suited up for the Ottawa 67’s.

Horvat was selected ninth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2013 NHL Draft, while Konecny was selected 24th overall by the Flyers in 2015.

Thursday is a good family day.

The two will face each other on January 16th (UBS Arena), January 24th (UBS Arena), January 30th (Wells Fargo Center) and April 12th (Wells Fargo Center).
