On Tuesday, the Penguins announced that they have signed goaltender Sergei Murashov, their fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, to a three-year entry-level contract.
The 20-year-old Russian goaltender spent time in the KHL and MHL and placed very good numbers in both. His short KHL career includes a 4-1-2 record with a 1.42 goals-against average (GAA) and a .936 save percentage (SV%), while he posted a 2.02 GAA and .934 SV % in the last three seasons in the MHL.
Murashov’s stock has risen considerably since being drafted by the Penguins, and the 6-foot-2, 172-pound goaltender should almost immediately be the organization’s top goaltender.
Murashov will join a group of Penguins goaltender prospects such as Taylor Gauthier, Filip Larsson and 2020 second-round pick Joel Blomqvist. Blomqvist hopes to see some playing time at the NHL level next season, as he has posted a record of 25-12-6, a 2.16 GAA and a .921 SV% last season with AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Murashov won the MHL Award for Best Goalkeeper in the 2022-23 seasonwhen he posted a 1.53 GAA and .948 SV% with 24 wins and 11 shutouts.
