At any time the New York Islanders interviews with the social media team Ilya Sorokinteammate Alexander Romanov It’s not far behind.

The two have become extremely close since the Islanders acquired Romanov from the Montreal Canadiens in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Sorokin, who came aboard in 2020 as the Islanders struggled in the Canadian bubble, certainly helped Romanov, a fellow Russian, acclimate to Long Island.

But if you saw the two of them interacting, you’d think they’d been best friends since kindergarten.

That’s just the bond they had.

Sunday was National Friendship Day and it was easy for the Islanders to choose which two players to feature:

It’s funny to think about the first time we interacted with Romanov.

In fact, we were talking to Sorokin at the training camp, but he didn’t understand the question, because despite working hard on English, sometimes there is confusion.

As we tried to help Sorokin understand, Romanov—a tent away—said, “What’s the question? I’ll be your translator.”

They both laughed and so did we.

You could tell from the start that Romanov would be a fun guy to cover.

You could also say he would be a stand-up teammate.

Whenever we asked Romanov questions about Sorokin, who has struggled for most of the 2023-24 season, he was always positive and unyielding support for his goaltender.

And Romanov’s outgoing personality undoubtedly helped Sorokin, a quiet guy (at least with us), come out of his shell a little.

We’re more than a month away from training camp and the start of year three for Romanov-Sorokin shenanigans, so buckle up.
