The under-21 coach, who won the European Championship last seasonwill be Gareth Southgateits successor in the short term as the FAN they postponed the decision on who to put in charge in the long term.

The FA took longer to find a permanent replacement for Southgate, necessitating a thorough process and to evaluate multiple candidatesalthough it has only been three and a half weeks since he resigned.

But Carsley’s reign will begin next month against the country he represented as a player, the Republic of Ireland, with the Birmingham-born 50-year-old having won 40 caps.

Carsley said: “It is an honor to lead this England team on an interim basis. As I know the players and the international football cycle well, it makes sense for me to guide the team as the FA continues the process of recruiting a new coach. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our aim is to secure promotion into the UEFA Nations League.”

FA CEO Mark Bullingham added: “Lee is a fantastic coach, well known to the majority of our current senior squad, having worked with the majority at international or club level. He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident that he will perform well in the upcoming Nations League games. We are grateful to Lee for taking on management of the team as we continue with our recruitment process.”
