EVERTON will start the season with the threat of another points deduction hanging over them.

The Premier League claims Everton breached PSR rules by an extra £6.5m for the 2022-23 season.

This is on top of the £16 million overspending for which they lost points as a result of interest payments linked to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.

Everton were docked two points by an independent commission for their 2022-23 overspending in April.

They had already been hit with the loss of ten points for infringements in the 2021-22 campaign the previous November – a sanction that was reduced to six points on appeal.

The Prem claims the breach in 2022-23 was much greater as stadium-related interest payments were NOT included.

An independent commission that imposed the second points deduction rejected Prem’s argument that £17 million in interest payments should be added to its losses.

But it will again look at payments worth £6.5 million, which it says could amount to another breach.

SunSport has learned that the committee has not yet informed the Toffees or the League when they will reach a decision, despite both parties pressing for a response.

The Premier League claims the disputed £6.5 million should be added to the club’s spending as it was used for day-to-day running expenses.

But Everton insist it must be removed as stadium costs do not count towards PSR calculations.

Everton were initially docked five points last season for the £16m breach, which was reduced to two points due to an early guilty plea and the fact they were being punished for excessive spending in successive seasons.

The club are contesting the alleged £6.5m breach so will not be ignored if found guilty, meaning another two-point penalty is possible.

Everton are confident they will not face PSR allegations in the 2023-24 season.

Premier League sides deducted points and others at risk

Nottingham Forest

Four points deducted during the 2023-24 season for breaching the Premier League spending limit by £34.563 million. The appeal was rejected and the decision was upheld.

Everton

The initial 10-point deduction for Premier League breaches in 2021-22 has been reduced to six points on appeal. Two more points were deducted later in the 2023-24 season. He appealed, but it was withdrawn after Prem survived.

Sheffield United

They have received a two-point deduction for their finances during the 2022-23 EFL season. Will start 2024-25 Championship season with -2 points after Prem relegation.

OTHERS WHO MAY FACE PUNISHMENT…

City of Manchester

The Etihad club emphatically denies the 115 allegations made against them in February 2023. The Commission’s lengthy case is scheduled to begin in October or November, but a final decision is not expected until March or April 2025.

Chelsea

Blues bosses have exposed illicit payments made to agents and others during the Roman Abramovich era. Fined £8.6m by Uefa but still not charged by the Prem despite an ongoing investigation.

Leicester

The Foxes breached Prem PSR loss limits last season but did not have to report their 2022-23 accounts until this month due to relegation. This delays the schedule and means they are likely to face a Prem points deduction for the 2024-25 season upon their return to the top flight.

Everton (again)

The Toffees are once again at risk of breaching PSR rules and are racing against time to raise funds and balance the books. This could not only lead to another indictment, but also to the administration. This would lead to an automatic nine-point deduction for the 2024/25 season.
