Ruan Curran (right) celebrates the only goal of the Solitude match [PACEMAKER]

Ryan Curran scored the only goal to start Cliftonville’s Premiership campaign in a 1-0 win over newly promoted Portadown at Solitude.

The Reds captain saw a penalty saved by Aaron McCarey before making amends in the 34th minute.

Rory Donnelly guided the ball across the front of the goal and Curran raced in to score at the far post.

It was a deserved victory for the Irish Cup winners, with Portadown offering little threat in north Belfast.
