Jonathan David scored the decisive goal in the 118th minute from the penalty spot.

A penalty was controversially awarded after Jayden Oosterwolde was ruled to have touched the ball in the box.

The decision was not made on the field, resulting in VAR intervention.

But after Spanish referee Sanchez Martinez looked at the replay, he had no doubts about the penalty being awarded.

David made no mistakes from the penalty spot as Lille progressed with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Mourinho, 61, was furious at the decision, claiming after the game that Martinez was quick to “load his paint” on him.

The coach will have the consolation of seeing his team compete in the Europa League.

However, he was cautious with his words at his press conference – and made that clear by repeating an iconic phrase from 2014.

He said: “We can do very well in the Europa League, but if… I’d rather not continue with that sentence.

“Because if I say that, I’m going to get in trouble.”

He first said the phrase in 2014

José Mourinho makes a dramatic debut in the Super Lig, with great competition and the Special One scored after just 20 minutes

Mourinho first said the phrase when asked about referee Chris Foy’s performance when Aston Villa beat Chelsea 1-0 in 2014.

After a match in which two of his players were sent off, the Special One said: “I prefer not to talk. If I talk, I’m in trouble.

“In big trouble. And I don’t want to be in big trouble.”

After the match in Istanbul, which ended in a 1-1 draw and a 3-2 aggregate victory for Lille, Mourinho gave one of his signature speeches.

He said, “It’s better not to talk about the penalty. When I look at other incidents that happened to me recently,

“Only the referee knows why it was the penalty, only the VAR knows. I’m proud of my team.”

The penalty was not Mourinho’s only complaint to the referees, as he also criticized what he saw as the referee’s failure to clamp down on the visitors’ wasting of time.

He added: “This [not wasting time] It’s the referee’s job, he has to respect the game. He has to make the players respect that.

“I can’t criticize opposing teams.

“They also try to get a result. If they showed a yellow card in the first 20 minutes, everything would change, but they don’t.”

Meanwhile, the former Chelsea manager is keen to sign Manchester City ace Mateo Kovacic before the transfer window closes.
