Carlos Tevez was taken to hospital in Argentina after experiencing chest pains, Independiente confirmed.
The 40-year-old former Manchester United and City striker was admitted to a clinic in Buenos Aires last night after seeking medical help and remained in a nearby hospital as a precaution for further tests.
Tevez has been coach of Independiente for eight months and has extended his contract until 2026 since his appointment. His club released a statement saying Tevez “will be hospitalized as a precaution until corresponding studies are completed.”
“Our coach, Carlos Tevez, was admitted to La Trinidad Sanatorium, in San Isidro, with chest pains. They carried out the corresponding studies and they were satisfactory”, they added. “He will continue with a series of tests scheduled in advance as part of a general check-up that is usually carried out.”
San Isidro is an upscale area of Buenos Aires, home of Independiente. The club has a training session scheduled for today. Last year, he was reportedly rushed to hospital after collapsing at home.
Tevez came into management after a glittering career that included seven years in the Premier League, where he helped West Ham escape relegation, although his time there was controversial as his club broke Premier League rules on third-party ownership.
At United, he won two Champions Leagues and two Premier League titles before moving to neighbors City, where he was part of the team that won the title in 2012 with Sergio Aguero’s last-gasp goal.
His first steps into management came at Rosário Central, when he was appointed coach in 2022, but he resigned after five months, citing the club’s upcoming presidential elections as the reason. His Independiente team was in sixth place after the first phase of the Argentine championship
