He reached the FA Cup final for the second year in a row, but poor results and a lack of progression on the pitch led to questions arising.

United have reportedly considered options to replace Ten Hag, but sources close to Ratcliffe and his team believe the new owner may opt to keep him in the role, reports. ESPN.

Keeping Ten Hag could be a cheaper option, as the coach’s wages will be reduced if he fails to qualify for the Champions League.

But United are considering their options, preparing alternative managerial targets should they decide to sack Ten Hag.

However, there are a few names that stand out at the moment, with Liverpool and Bayern Munich also fighting for top targets.

And one of United’s top picks, Gareth Southgate, could still manage England in July, when pre-season begins.

The Red Devils are also linked with former Chelsea managers Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel, who led Bayern to the Champions League semi-final.

Although Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is also interesting but could join as coach.

Experts’ verdict on Ten Hag’s future

What are the experts’ stance on Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United?

Jamie Carragher – fired

“I don’t see how Erik ten Hag will stay. It’s just performance after performance.”

Gary Neville – Stay if you win the FA Cup

“Firing a manager who won two trophies in his first two seasons at the club would be extreme.”

Louis Saha – On the fence

“I don’t see it so clearly, but they need changes from the players, but they also need changes from him.”

Alan Shearer – fired

“I believe the future of the Man Utd manager has already been determined. Even if they win the FA Cup, I think he is gone.”

Brighton manager Robert De Zerbi and Brentford’s Thomas Frank are the other names linked.

Ten Hag could return to his former club Ajax if he is sacked by the Dutch giants who are keen to reunite the 54-year-old.
