FORMER England star John Terry has blamed Marks & Spencer suits for their elimination from the 2010 World Cup.

He said the players were sweating inside the sweltering team bus before the defeat to Germany in South Africa.

Terry, now 43, said the boys asked manager Fabio Capello – through captain Steven Gerrard – if they could take them out, but were refused.

The former Chelsea defender recalled: “We had an hour and 20 minutes on the bus and all the players were asking: ‘Stevie, talk to the foreman about suits, we don’t want to wear suits, it’s hot, it’s horrible’.”

But he said they were told the FA had a deal with M&S.

He said that when they got off the bus, sweating because the air conditioning didn’t work, they saw their opponents arriving in Bloemfontein in shorts and flip-flops.

He added: “Someone is responsible for this.”

England lost 4-1, with Frank Lampard’s shot disallowed in the round of 16.

But Terry admitted the team had not performed well, saying: “There’s no getting away from the fact that it’s us as players.

“We were miles away.”
