Ian Maatsen has declared his intention to leave Chelsea – and turn his loan at Borussia Dortmund into a permanent deal.

And the left-back’s father accused the Blues of putting money-making ahead of the team’s best interests under Todd Boehly’s ownership.

Dutch under-21 international Maatsen moved to Stamford Bridge in 2018 from PSV Eindhoven.

He was loaned to Charlton, Coventry and Burnley, winning the Championship title with the Clarets last season.

Boehly’s consortium replaced Roman Abramovich at the helm of the west London club in 2022.

Maatsen, 22, returned to Chelsea last summer and made 15 appearances for the senior team.

But he has excelled since his January loan at Dortmund, helping the team reach the Champions League semi-finals.

The 50-cap youth international is in line to face Paris Saint-Germain at home on Wednesday.

The player and his father Edward are now pushing to turn his loan into a long-term deal with the Bundesliga giants.

Maatsen Sr said: “We are working on Ian staying in Dortmund.

“The two clubs need to reach an agreement. Ian is developing really well here.

“Also, things haven’t gone well at Chelsea since they changed ownership.

Chelsea’s top summer transfer targets

“A lot of things at the club revolve around money. This sometimes seems to be much more important than the benefit of the club.

“We have other options besides Chelsea and Dortmund. But Dortmund seems like a good fresh start for Ian.

“And look at some of the other lads who have come through the club – Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, for example.”

Maatsen’s father also advised him to avoid the most prominent clubs to build his career.

Eduardo said Voetbal Internacional: “As a young player you shouldn’t join a very big club, with all the pressure involved.

“For example, a club like Manchester City wouldn’t just put a young left-back in the starting lineup.

“Heads would roll if things were even a little worse than before.

“And as a young player, you would soon be forgotten if things didn’t go well for you.”
