And the right-back ended up staying at Manchester United for his entire career in 2011.

Neville played 602 games for his boyhood team, whilst winning eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

But now he has opened up about the discipline instilled in him by United’s no-nonsense coaches.

Alongside Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, Neville and his brother Phil were coached by some legendary names.

Eric Harrison is credited with helping Sir Alex Ferguson turn these young men into world-famous stars.

While former United and England World Cup winner Nobby Stiles also put the lads through their paces on the training ground.

And Neville has now revealed the pair had unwritten rules that could never be broken.

Speaking of the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet podcast, he explained: “I don’t think I would have gotten anywhere near where I was without being taken.

“Eric Harrison, he was tough as the youth team coach, and Nobby Stiles. You couldn’t miss a tackle, it was prohibited.

“If you missed a pass, or if I didn’t play it forward at the feet of a striker at Old Trafford on a Saturday and return it on my first throw, I was dying.

Roy Keane in touching moment with Gary Neville as he tells Man Utd friend ‘you deserve better’

“You always had these voices around you, they were stepping on you every move, there was nowhere to go in terms of falling standards or work ethic.”

Roy Keane was already in the first team when the Class of 92 entered senior training.

He added: “Sometimes players meet up and train with the first team, and you know they’re going to leave. [and won’t come back].

But when [Gary] Neville and them [Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, and Ryan Giggs] we found, they were brilliant players, and we knew they could handle [the stick].

“The credit I would give the guys they found is that I knew they were here to stay.

“You are talking about four or five players, [Ryan] Giggs was already at the head of the group, but I knew they were here to stay.

“I can only speak from my own experiences, but when the players came across they were undoubtedly talented because they were at Manchester United, but they had great habits and characteristics.”

Experts’ verdict on Ten Hag’s future

What are the experts’ stance on Erik ten Hag’s future at Manchester United?

Jamie Carragher – fired

“I don’t see how Erik ten Hag will stay. It’s just performance after performance.”

Gary Neville – Stay if you win the FA Cup

“Firing a manager who won two trophies in his first two seasons at the club would be extreme.”

Louis Saha – On the fence

“I don’t see it so clearly, but they need changes from the players, but they also need changes from him.”

Alan Shearer – fired

“I believe the future of the Man Utd manager has already been determined. Even if they win the FA Cup, I think he is gone.”
