Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice as Monaco beat Ligue 1 side Clermont 4-1 on Saturday to complete their return to the Champions League.

The Principality team lost 3-2 to Lyon last weekend, but secured maximum points at the Stade Louis II to consolidate second place with two games remaining this season.

Paris Saint-Germain have already become champions and have a week off from domestic chores.

But in a four-way fight to qualify for next season’s Champions League, Monaco have 61 points, six points ahead of fourth-placed Lille, who occupy the place in the Champions League qualifying phase.

Lille welcome in-form Lyon to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Monday.

While Monaco took a giant step towards playing in the Champions League for the first time since the 2018-2019 season, Clermont are practically doomed to return to Ligue 2.

Takumi Minamino scored for the hosts after a poor clearance from Maximiliano Caufriez allowed the Japanese international to curl his eighth goal of the season into the top corner fifteen minutes into the game.

Pascal Gastien’s Clermont reacted, with Muhammed Cham leveling the visitors in the 34th minute.

But just three minutes later, Ben Yedder teed up Breel Embolo for his first goal of the season, in the Swiss player’s first match this season following a serious knee injury.

The Monaco captain scored his team’s third goal in the 57th minute, adding his second of the night three minutes from time, scoring his 117th goal for the club in all competitions.

Meanwhile, third-placed Brest, five points behind Monaco, will try to maintain their lead in the Champions League against Nantes, in 15th, later this Saturday.
