Nine months of competition in Europa League it came to a head on Thursday afternoon.
After qualifying began in August last year with 57 teams in total, the European club tournament is now down to the final four. Bayer Leverkusen, champion of the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 Marseille, and Serie A’s AS Roma and Atalanta played the first leg of the semi-finals last week. On Thursday, the second leg will determine who advances to the final.
Of these four teams, only Leverkusen have won the Europa League before – in the 1987-88 competition. Roma were runners-up last year behind Sevilla and Internazionale in 1990-91. Marseille have been runners-up three times (1998-99, 2003-04, 2017-18) but have never won. This year marks the first time that Atalanta have progressed past the quarter-finals.
