His club confirmed that police carried out saliva and alcohol tests for Matazo and both came back negative.

The 85-year-old cyclist is believed to have gone through a red light and Matazo was unable to avoid the accident.

A statement from Antwerp said: “This morning, Eliot Matazo was involved in a serious traffic accident with a cyclist. According to initial findings, the cyclist may have been blinded by the sun and ran a red light.

“As is usual in these types of accidents, Eliot took saliva and alcohol tests and both were negative.

“Without intending to prejudice the accident investigation, all elements, including witness statements, point to an unfortunate accident.

“Eliot is extremely affected by the events and neither the player nor the club will make any further statement until the investigation is complete.

“Our thoughts are with the cyclist and his family, and Eliot and the club hope for a happy outcome.”

Fans responded by sending Matazo well wishes, with one saying: “Good luck to all parties involved. We hope no one is seriously damaged by this. You can repair modes of transportation, but your mind and body are much harder .”

Another added: “Courage Eliot!”

And a third said: “Poor guy, a dream start to his career and increasingly difficult after that

“I hope everyone does well in this story.”
