Fans called Emiliano Martinez a “sleeper agent” after his mistake against Liverpool gave Arsenal a boost in the title race.

The Aston Villa star let out a howl just 63 seconds into the game against the Reds as he gave the visitors the lead.

Martinez, 31, failed to meet Harvey Elliot’s cross before inadvertently slotting it into his own goal.

If Liverpool win the match at Villa Park, it would give Tottenham hope of finishing in the top four.

This would boost Arsenal’s title hopes as Spurs face title rivals Manchester City tomorrow night.

And fans reacted quickly on social media.

One posted: “After four years, sleeper agent Martinez has finally been activated.”

A second wrote: “Once a top scorer, always a top scorer.”

A third commented: “Emi Martinez understands the mission as a former Arsenal player.”

A fourth said: “Former Arsenal goalkeeper Emi Martinez dropped the ball in the net to give Spurs a chance in the Champions League, which means they have to try against Man City??? Ohhh hello , narrative.”

Another added: “Martinez wants Arsenal to win the League. You know what I mean.”
