PREMIER LEAGUE footballers tend to earn big money, but a former star could now be earning more money working at Aldi.

Former Crystal Palace goalscorer Chris Kettings swapped the football pitch for the supermarket when he hung up his gloves in 2017.

Kettings began life in Man City’s academy before pursuing a journeyman career as a reserve goalkeeper.

The 31-year-old Scot visited Blackpool, Birmingham, Morecambe and York City as she looked for a place to call home.

But despite sharing a dressing room with the likes of Wilfired Zaha and Yannick Bolasie during his Premier League days with Palace, things didn’t work out too well for Kittings.

He did enough to earn three caps for Scotland’s under-21s, but was unable to secure a starting position at any of the clubs he played for.

In his eight-year career, he made just 35 appearances between the sticks.

And despite having a presence at Premier League and Championship clubs, the highest level Kettings managed to play at was in League Two with Morecambe.

His loan spree ended when he was released by Palace in 2016, before giving it one last chance following a free transfer to Oldham Athletic.

But just a year later, Kettings called time on his career and hasn’t looked back since.

Thanks to a three-year stint during his career where he studied Business and Accounting at the Open University, Kettings was able to get on his feet and enter the professional world.

He canceled his football contract and signed a deal with supermarket giant Aldi, where he signed on as Store Operations Director.

Since then, he has managed to progress through the ranks and is now National Supply Chain Director.

Aldi supply chain managers can earn up to £94,240 a year, meaning if Kettings is at the top of the scale he could certainly be earning more now than he did as a Crystal Palace reserve.

Kettings has previously spoken about how important it is for football players to educate themselves and ensure they have a safety plan in place in case things don’t work out.

In an interview with the PFA in 2015 he said: “What I would say to other players who are considering education is just go for it!

“It is a very rewarding process and can open many doors. Not only will it give you a plan B in case something goes wrong in football, but it is also a starting point for a second career for when the day comes that you retire from the game.

He added: “I think a lot of footballers are reluctant to explore education because they feel that by doing so they are accepting the fact that one day they will no longer be professional footballers.”
