GARY O’NEIL says some managers would not want to work in Wolves’ “tough and difficult” financial circumstances.

But the 40-year-old is relishing the challenge and has warned fans: don’t expect a summer of spending.

The former Bournemouth manager arrived at Molineux just two days before the start of this season, with the club letting Daniel Podence, Matheus Nunes, Ryan Giles and Raul Jimenez leave last summer to balance the books.

And O’Neil, who expects another belt-tightening in the postseason, said: “We will not be blessed with resources, but rather with money to spend.

“We have a lot of players on loan so hopefully some of them can come back and help us or we can sell some and that will help us. [spend].

“The owners have invested a lot of money in recent years and are not in a position at the moment to invest a lot of money [more] in.

“So they will be able to help with little things, but we are not going to go out and sign number nines for £40 million.

“We have to be very smart and cute in what we are able to recruit. That’s part of the challenge.

“Certain managers will not want to work under these types of circumstances and will think it is hard and difficult.

“But it’s something I’m really looking forward to and enjoying.
“I’m sure there will be difficult times when I will face criticism, but we will try hard and try to have another successful season next year.”

O’Neil replaced West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, who fell out with the Wolves hierarchy over “differences of opinion” over last summer’s spending.

And the talented English manager defied the odds by dragging Wolves to within two points of the top half ahead of Sunday’s final Prem game against Liverpool.

Having previously acknowledged that he was not considered a glamorous appointment, the former Portsmouth, Middlesbrough and West Ham midfielder is proud of the work he has done.

O’Neil, who was speaking at the opening of the Ballerz football center in Kent, added: “It’s important not to get carried away.

“I’m definitely not as good as some people said when we were winning and I’m not going to be as bad as some people said when we were losing.

“I still only have 20 months to go before I become a permanent manager.

“All my learning has been done at the highest level in a really fierce and unforgiving league, so I need to improve a lot, always.

“But I’m satisfied with the job I did because I walked into a dressing room full of big international players with big egos who played for big clubs and they weren’t sure what was going on and I had to bring them together. and make them push in the same direction.

“And that’s not easy.

“Obviously we had to reduce the squad a little, reduce the wage bill heavily and make a huge profit of £100m on player sales.

“I’m a little disappointed that it’s slowed down. But it motivates me to make sure we try harder next season.”
