GETAFE’s clash with Deportivo Alavés was briefly suspended due to shouts directed at Mason Greenwood.

The 22-year-old striker is on loan at Getafe from Manchester United.

He played the full 90 minutes last night as his team lost 1-0 away from home.

But there was controversy during the LaLiga game when referee Jorge Figueroa Vazquez stopped play after 18 minutes.

The match was temporarily suspended due to Alavés fans chanting in the stands: “Greenwood, die”.

With the game halted, fans were alerted to their chants on the stadium’s tannoy system.

The chant would have subsided after the warning.

However, some Getafe officials continued to disagree with what was being said in the stands.

The club has not yet revealed whether it will make a formal complaint to LaLiga officials.

It is also unclear whether Alavés could face an investigation.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control in alleged crimes relating to a woman that allegedly occurred between November 1, 2018 and October 15, 2022.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed on 2 February 2023 that all charges against him had been dropped.

Greenwood has scored ten goals in 34 appearances this season.

He has just one game left until his loan at Getafe expires.

The club hope to keep him next season, but will only be able to pay for another loan.

Man Utd are yet to confirm Greenwood’s future and his contract at Old Trafford does not expire until 2025.

The Red Devils are reportedly open to offers this summer and want £45m.

And the likes of Napoli, Juventus and Barcelona are all linked to his signing.
