He took charge of eight games, winning four as the Midlanders tried to recover from Wazza’s dark spell.

But Mowbray shocked Birmingham bosses when, just a month after his arrival, he was forced to temporarily step down due to ill health.

He then took a formal medical leave of absence in March when Mark Venus intervened in six games.

Gary Rowett later returned to finish the season but was unable to prevent Brum from being relegated to League One.

Fans were left wondering whether Mowbray would return to help the club return to the Championship.

But Birmingham are now looking for their seventh manager in less than 12 months after Mowbray decided to step down to recover from surgery.

Owner and President Tom Wagner said, “We are disappointed that Tony will not return to lead the team, but we respect his decision to put his health and family first.

“In a short period of time at the Blues, Tony has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and a work ethic that has galvanized everyone around him. He is an exceptional human being and will always be welcome at St. Andrew’s.”

CEO Garry Cook added: “We look forward to Tony’s return to the Club and continuing the excellent work he started earlier this year. Unfortunately, it is not to be.

“Preparation for the new season has already begun and Tony told us that based on his treatment and recovery program he would not be able to do the necessary work before the start of the new season.
