CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN will be given the chance to return to his first club Ajax this summer – if Manchester United agree to a reward.

But the 32-year-old Danish midfielder must wait until Erik ten Hag’s future is resolved if his former Spurs gaffer Mauricio Pochettino joins.

Eriksen still has 12 months left on his £150,000-a-week contract, but United are keen to take some of their top earners off the books to help fund Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s planned rebuild.

Still, with no chance of players matching their Old Trafford wages elsewhere, United face using a huge chunk of the summer budget to relieve them.

United would not ask for a fee for Eriksen as long as this was taken into account in any agreement over the remainder of his contract.

Poch has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after leaving Chelsea and Eriksen spent five years at Spurs under the Argentine.

It is believed Pochettino wants an immediate return and could make Eriksen one of his key players once again.

The playmaker joined United in 2022 after an impressive six-month spell at Brentford.

Eriksen’s brief spell in London came after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020.

And in his first season in Manchester he made 44 appearances in all competitions.

But the veteran failed to reach that goal this season, playing 28 times after suffering multiple injuries.

Eriksen was an unused substitute in Saturday’s FA Cup final victory over Man City.

The Red Devils won 2-1 thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

The result meant United also secured Europa League football despite finishing eighth in the Premier League.

Chelsea, who finished sixth, will now play in the Europa Conference League.

While Newcastle, seventh placed, does not have continental football.
