SEAN LONGSTAFF’S decision not to travel to Australia with Newcastle appears to be the right one.

The academy graduate could have been watching a makeshift team of teenagers being beaten 8-0 by the A-League All Stars.

But instead he was on the cricket field – and doing a decent job too.

Long Staffaged 26, played for former club Tynemouth and received the ball.

He came forward and proved he still has plenty of pace by putting the batsman in all sorts of trouble and catching him at first slip.

The wicket turned out to be a decent scalp as it was Haydon Mustard – son of former England wicketkeeper Phil, 41.

One fan commented: “Christ he looks really decent.”

Another added: “I hope he put his card behind the bar too!

A third posted: “Probably would have played at county level if it wasn’t for football too.”

And one noted: “Bit of rhythm there!”

Midfielder Jay Turner-Cooke, aged 20, and fourth goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, aged 32, who was team captain, were the most experienced players on display.

But they were joined by six teenagers in the starting eleven.

And some fans wanted their money back after 53,000 people attended the game.

Add a field invader and a wild flock of birds and it’s not much of a trip.

And coach Pellegrino Matarazzo still calls the Brazilian his ‘angel’.

Matarazzo was Joelinton’s assistant coach during the midfielder’s time in Germany at Hoffenheim.

Recalling the frightening incident, Matarazzo revealed: “I was in line and I wasn’t feeling well.

“I tried to go to the Coca-Cola machine to get a drink quickly.

“I realized I was about to faint and I did.

“When I opened my eyes I saw Joelinton! ‘Rino, Rino, are you okay?’

“He was like a small angel, not a big one – Joelinton, what are you doing here?”
