Norwich City hope to appoint FC Nordsjaelland manager Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new manager by the end of the week, according to BBC Radio Norfolk.

The 35-year-old Dane is believed to be in ongoing discussions with the Canaries over replacing David Wagner, who was Sacked the day after Championship play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds.

Norwich finished sixth in the table under Wagner and his replacement will prepare the Carrow Road club for a third season in England’s second tier.

Thorup has been in charge of Danish top flight side Nordsjaelland since January 2023, having been promoted from the role of assistant coach.

He guided them to second place in 2022-23 to earn a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.

And in his first full season in charge this season, he took Nordsjaelland to the group stage of European competition and finished fourth in the Danish Superliga table.

Analysis – City fans hope for a great Dane

It’s fair to say that Norwich City fans have been hard to please in recent seasons.

Dean Smith did not light any fires in Carrow Road; he was followed in the head coaching hot seat by David Wagner, who guided the club to a respectable sixth place in the championship.

The play-offs were beckoning, but when the Canaries were beaten by Leeds United in the semi-final second leg at Elland Road, Wagner’s dismissal seemed inevitable. There weren’t many complaints from fans.

Sporting director Ben Knapper is firmly at Carrow Road and is now making his first big decision: what’s next?

It seems Knapper is hoping the Danish Superliga will answer that question. Johannes Hoff Thorup is 35 years old and part of an FC Nordsjaelland team that prides itself on looking to youth to get results, a plan that aligns with Knapper’s desire to reduce the average playing age at City.

The Canaries faithful are ready for a fresh start and Thorup’s first task will be to get those fans firmly behind his plan.
