SUPER League bosses are ready to press ahead with a breakaway competition – following a major legal victory.

And there could be plans for an attempt to replace the Champions League with a new tournament as early as the 2025-26 season.

The Madrid Commercial Court found that UEFA and FIFA were guilty of “abusing their dominant position” in their attempts to strangle the rebel competition at birth in 2021.

Judge Sofia Gil Garcia was asked to make a final decision following the European Court of Justice’s verdict in December.

The ECJ concluded that UEFA and FIFA acted “illegally” when they threatened to punish separatist rebels and sanction any players who took part in the competition.

This decision was confirmed by the Spanish court, preventing European and global governing bodies from taking measures to prevent the creation of a new competition.

This will encourage Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are betting on the Super League as a way of generating much higher revenues than those offered by the Champions League.

But Prem clubs and their German counterparts have already made public statements that they will not be part of such a conspiracy, with similar regulations now being discussed by Italy’s Serie A.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City, United and Spurs were badly damaged by the huge fan backlash to their initial decision to jump on the 2021 Super League train.

Prem clubs have unanimously agreed to the new rules, meaning they must give three years’ notice before entering any breakaway competition, or be deducted 30 points and face severe financial penalties.

And the planned Football Regulator – put on hold because of the General Election, but which will almost certainly return to Parliament regardless of the outcome of the 4th July vote – will also have the power to stop clubs taking part in a competition without the FA’s consent. .

The Super League and its PR arm, Madrid-based A22, were delighted by the verdict, with one senior figure claiming the decision detonated a “bomb” under UEFA.

While a launch in just 15 months may not be possible, Super League bosses are not ruling out that they could aim for that start date, after revealing a revised version of the plans in December.

Under the latest plans, 64 clubs will be divided into three divisions, with the top-tier “Star” league having 16 clubs in two groups of eight, playing 14 games in the initial phase before the top four from each go for a room. -final stage.

The Super League insists its scheme will allow for some promotion and relegation, but admits that “historical” criteria would be applied to the initial entry list and that national performances in the previous season would not directly determine access.

This would likely mean, if the competition started in September, that Chelsea and United would be at a higher level next season than Aston Villa or Tottenham, despite finishing below them in the Prem.
