The Championship team got fans talking when they released a mysterious post on social media.

It showed an image of what appeared to be a simplistic emblem and left many wondering if it could be a new Stoke crest.

Stoke-on-Trent has been known for its rich pottery history for centuries.

And this apparent launch is more than a subtle homage to this industry, as it features the image of a tower inspired by its world-famous pottery villages.

Nothing official was mentioned about a crest change until these social media antics, but many now believe a big change is coming.

However, it appears the potential new badge was considered a huge own goal among fans.

One responded to the news with: “Certainly not ahahaha, that’s the worst badge in the history of football. I would genuinely boycott the club if I supported them.”

Another said: “It really irritates me when clubs change their badges based on a few fans complaining and then the club thinks all the fans hate the badge.”

A third commented: “This just stinks.”

While a fourth said: “Tough luck Stoke, as Leeds fans we know what that’s like.”

This refers to when Leeds United’s owners rolled out a horrible-looking new shield that sent fans into meltdown – forcing the club into an embarrassing turnaround.

And the messages of joy at this potential new Stoke crest continued to pour in from the Elland Road faithful.

“Maybe we won’t have the ‘newest badge’ trophy for much longer,” joked one.

Another said: “Even the one in Leeds was better than this.”

While one shocked fan wrote: “This has got to be a joke!”

The current Stoke emblem was introduced 23 years ago, in 2001.

It was the Football headlines website that provoked fury as they speculated about the new coat of arms.

However, SunSport believes Stoke will not change their logo entirely.

And the ceramic nod will likely just be an icon used on their latest kits rather than an entirely new badge.
