Frank Lampard speaks to Burnley following Vincent Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich

Frank Lampard is among the early candidates for the Burnley job, with chairman Alan Pace running a thorough process to find Vincent Kompany’s successor instead of making a quick appointment.

Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich was unexpected at Turf Moor and there was initial confidence in retaining the Belgium manager to oversee their Championship campaign following relegation.

But after respecting “Vincent’s ambition to explore new opportunities”, Burnley began looking for potential coaches, with Lampard among those considered. It is understood there have been initial inquiries into which coaches are available, including Lampard.

Lampard’s last managerial position It was last season at Chelsea when he took on the role on an interim basis for the past two months following the dismissal of Graham Potter.

He had been at Everton for a year, securing Premier League survival in the penultimate game of the 2020/21 season, before being sacked midway through the following season, with the club in the relegation zone at the time.

In his debut season as manager, he took Derby to the Championship play-off final, then returned to Chelsea, where he won the Champions League and three Premier Leagues as a player, only for his spell in charge to last 18 months.

Lampard is similar to Kompany in the sense that he had a brilliant career before embarking on coaching. Pace is believed to be taking a close look at his coaching style, which would make Lampard’s assistant or first-team coach an important role.

Scott Parker is also believed to be in contention, having previously taken Fulham and Bournemouth to the Premier League with promotion campaigns. Craig Bellamy has temporarily taken charge of the team and is expected to be a candidate in a process that is expected to last at least 10 days, as potential managers are evaluated and interviewed.

Stoke City are set to sign former England under-21 international Ben Gibson following his departure from Norwich.

Gibson completed his medical at Stoke’s training ground and will become the second signing of this summer for Steven Schumacher.
