Back in my time at Newcastle, if you asked me to predict which of my teammates would play in a Champions League final, Joselu wouldn’t be at the top of the list.

In fact, it’s fair to say he wouldn’t be even close!

But I will be very excited to see Jos lining up for Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund in the biggest club game of all.

Just like everyone else who shared the dressing room with him a few years ago.

I was really excited for him when he came off the bench and scored those two goals in the semi-final against Bayern Munich.

He’s one of the good guys, always smiling even when things aren’t going so well.

And let’s be honest, it wasn’t easy for Jos when he was at Newcastle after arriving from Stoke.

He fought for goals and was in and out of touch. But he never let his head down and remained a popular figure in the team.

He worked hard in training and, on the pitch, he was one of those strikers who never hid, did the dirty work and ran all day.

At that time, Newcastle didn’t create as many chances as they had in the last two seasons.

After promotion under Rafa Benitez, it was a matter of keeping the game tight and making sure we weren’t in the relegation zone.

Am I surprised that Joselu has done so well since leaving Newcastle and returning to Spain?

Inside the love affair between Real Madrid and Jude Bellingham

Well, yes and no. He wasn’t a bad finisher in training. And on game days, his holding game, work rate, football intelligence and ability to bring others into the game were really good.

There were just a few goals to go – six in 46 Premier League games.

But confidence is everything for a striker and he never had any momentum during his two years with us.

Since he started playing for Alavés, the goals continued to flow at Espanyol before he landed his dream loan move to Real Madrid.

Those two goals in the semi-final were not at all surprising.

He debuted for the Spanish national team last year, aged 33 – and scored five goals in ten games.

He is now earning rewards for his professionalism, desire and work ethic.

Joselu’s Indian summer is one of the greatest football stories of recent times and, who knows, the best is yet to come.

As Gateshead manager I was lucky enough to celebrate their FA Trophy success over Solihull Moors at Wembley a few weeks ago.

Well, now it’s with my old partner.

And even if he starts on the bench, we wouldn’t bet on Joselu scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final.
