James, 24, was fouled by João Pedro and then saw red as he attacked, kicking the Brazilian as he ran past.

Chelsea appealed the red card and presented a bizarre justification for trying to overturn the defender’s suspension.

According to Daily Mailthe club claims that James became disoriented after being fouled by Pedro.

Chelsea adds: “It was not his intention to harm Mr Pedro, he was simply pushing him with his foot.”

James missed the final game of the season against Bournemouth, so has already served one match of his four-match ban, which has been increased from the usual three as his red card against Brighton was his second of the season.

But fans want the ban to be increased because they believe the grounds used for appeal are ridiculous.

One fan reacted by saying: “You should get an extra game for stupid appeals like that.”

Another added: “Why appeal? It was a clear red card offence.”

Chelsea is beyond a laughing stock

By Andy Dillon

CHELSEA’s longest serving manager under the club’s new owners has left by mutual consent.

The fact that Mauricio Pochettino lasted just 325 days and highlights how the club has become a basket case.

You can expect a coach to lose his job after five games WITHOUT a win, but only Chelsea could lose theirs after five consecutive victories.

When fans wrote an open letter to president Todd Boehly and his teammate Behdad Eghbali in March, they expressed fears that their beloved Chelsea were becoming “a laughingstock on and off the pitch”.

It’s way beyond that now, with the departure of the manager who finally seemed to be getting through to a team called ‘£1billion bottle jobs’ just over two months ago when they slumped to defeat against Liverpool’s youth team in the final of the Carabao Cup. .

Read Andy Dillon’s full opinion on Pochettino’s sacking and what it means here.

A third wrote: “They should even add an extra one for appeal.”

And another commented: “Why did he appeal to your stupidity?”
