LEICESTER’s charges for breaching FFP rules are set to drag on beyond the start of the new season.

The promoted Foxes could take points twice on their return to the Prem – and that is likely to continue beyond the start of August.

Leicester were accused of breaching Prem spending limits in March.

And the EFL intends to charge them separately for overspending on the way to winning the championship.

The 2016 Prem champions pushed for the first case to be heard this summer so they would be aware of any points disadvantage at the start of the season.

But SunSport understands the case will not be fast-tracked – with the independent committee, which decides the hearing date, still to be determined.

Leicester are without a manager after Enzo Maresca left for Chelsea, but the game’s rulers appear willing to offer little sympathy.

Prem and EFL officials told SunSport Leicester are to blame for the delay due to their aggressive approach to fighting the allegations, which involved launching legal action against both leagues.

The Foxes are believed to have changed their strategy several times last season in response to their fluctuating form.

Having cooperated with the Prem when Maresca’s side were running away from the Championship, the club then sought to delay things when poor results put promotion in jeopardy.

The Premier League’s accusations relate to the top-flight seasons between 2020 and 2023, when they lost £215.3m, more than £110m over the limit.

Based on the punishments handed out to Nottingham Forest and Everton, the Foxes face a significant points decision – possibly up to 12 points.

They are also being investigated by the EFL for possible Championship violations and are under a transfer embargo.

The Premier League said it would take up the EFL’s case and impose any penalties next season.

Leicester and the Premier League have been contacted for comment.

Premier League sides deducted points and others at risk

Nottingham Forest

Four points deducted during the 2023-24 season for breaching the Premier League spending limit by £34.563 million. The appeal was rejected and the decision was upheld.

Everton

The initial 10-point deduction for Premier League breaches in 2021-22 has been reduced to six points on appeal. Two more points were deducted later in the 2023-24 season. He appealed, but it was withdrawn after Prem survived.

Sheffield United

They have received a two-point deduction for their finances during the 2022-23 EFL season. Will start 2024-25 Championship season with -2 points after Prem relegation.

OTHERS WHO MAY FACE PUNISHMENT…

City of Manchester

The Etihad club emphatically denies the 115 allegations made against them in February 2023. The Commission’s lengthy case is scheduled to begin in October or November, but a final decision is not expected until March or April 2025.

Chelsea

Blues bosses have exposed illicit payments made to agents and others during the Roman Abramovich era. Fined £8.6m by Uefa but still not charged by the Prem despite an ongoing investigation.

Leicester

The Foxes breached Prem PSR loss limits last season but did not have to report their 2022-23 accounts until this month due to relegation. This delays the schedule and means they are likely to face a Prem points deduction for the 2024-25 season upon their return to the top flight.

Everton (again)

The Toffees are once again at risk of breaching PSR rules and are racing against time to raise funds and balance the books. This could not only lead to another indictment, but also to the administration. This would lead to an automatic nine-point deduction for the 2024/25 season.
