MANCHESTER UNITED failed in an attempt to hijack Chelsea’s move for Tosin Adarabioyo, it has been claimed.
SunSport revealed last month that the Blues were leading the race to sign the centre-back, who is now a free agent after leaving Fulham.
The West Londoners swooped in on Newcastle to acquire the 26-year-old’s services.
But according to The Daily Mailthey had to fend off late interest from United to sign the former Manchester City academy star.
They claim the Red Devils presented a “concrete proposal” in the manner of Adarabioyo last weekend.
But the defender reportedly rejected the offer, having already committed his future to Chelsea.
New Blues manager Enzo Maresca worked with Adarabioyo – who had a medical with the Blues this week – during his time at Manchester City.
And the Italian is said to have played a major role in the former Fulham man’s decision to remain in west London.
The failure to convince Adarbioyo to move to Old Trafford could work against Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag.
SunSport revealed last month that United bosses had chosen to relieve the Dutchman of his duties, even though he led them to FA Cup glory.

Ten Hag, however, has not yet received his P45.
It is unclear why the club could not hold its ground and give Lt Hag his marching orders.
Ten Hag led United to eighth place last season but insists he is the right man to take the club forward.
When asked if he thinks he has what it takes to restore the club to its past glory, he said last month: “Absolutely.
“If the right players are available, we have a good squad.
“We lost almost all of our defense and then we have problems. I’m going to keep fighting.”
