EURO 2024 is just around the corner and promises some impressive encounters from the start of the group stage.

Hungary and Switzerland face off this Saturday at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, just a day after hosts Germany kick off the tournament against Scotland.

The Hungarians and Swiss may have a tough game ahead, but their own game will include a strong Premier League presence.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez and Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai will compete for Marco Rossi’s team and will be joined by Sunderland’s Callum Styles.

Switzerland, on the other hand, will be represented by Manuel Akanji, from Manchester City, and Fabian Schar, from Newcastle.

Akanji and Shar will be joined by former Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri, former Arsenal ace Granit Xhaka, former Nottingham Forest player Remo Freuler, former Chelsea midfielder Denis Zakaria and Burnley’s Zeki Amdouni.

Hungary have proven to be underdogs in major competitions.

The Magyars proved that against England, who they defeated twice over two legs in the Nations League two years ago.

However, the Hungarian team has not reached the round of 16 since 1972.

Switzerland, on the other hand, reached the round of 16 in 2016 and the quarterfinals in 2020.

Road to the Euro

Hungary reached Euro 2024 after winning Group G undefeated, following five victories.

Marco Rossi’s team defeated Serbia, Montenegro, Lithuania and Bulgaria.

Switzerland, on the other hand, finished second in Group I, behind Romania.

The Swiss overcame Israel, Belarus, Kosovo and Andorra in the qualifying round.

Both teams do not appear to be dealing with late injury issues ahead of their Euro 2024 opener in Germany.

Hungary will be able to count on players such as RB Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi, his teammate Willi Orban, Freiburg’s Roland Sallai, Ferencvaros’ Barnabas Varga and Hajduk Split’s Laszlo Kleinheisler.

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has a golden generation at his disposal, which includes players such as Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, Inter Milan’s Yann Sommer and Monaco’s Breel Embolo.

Those to watch

Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai has enjoyed an impressive campaign at Liverpool.

Szoboszlai, 23, joined the Reds last summer from RB Leipzig in a £60m deal.

The midfielder racked up a total of seven goals and four assists in 45 appearances in his first campaign at Anfield.

The Hungarian star also scored 12 goals in 42 caps for the national team.

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka also had an impressive debut campaign at Bayer Leverkusen, which he led to their first Bundesliga title.

Xhaka helped Leverkusen win their first domestic double after an incredible unbeaten run that saw Xabi Alonso’s side lose just once in the Europa League final against Atalanta.

The midfielder has scored four goals and two assists in 50 appearances this season.

This comes after the Arsenal hero’s 14 goals in 125 caps for the Swiss national team.

Head to head

Hungary and Switzerland have met a total of 46 times in all competitions.

The Hungarians have won the majority of their 30 games, while the Swiss have recorded 11 victories.

Switzerland have won their three most recent meetings, as well as six of their last nine games, of which they have lost just one.

This will be the first time that the two countries face each other in the Euros.
