Euro 2024 – Ranking of the five favorites to win Young Player of the Tournament

After each European Championship, Young Player of the Tournament is awarded to the best player under the age of 21 at the start of the calendar year.

Euro 2024 will see a host of bright youngsters compete this summer and we’ve ranked the five favorites to win the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Xavi Simons – Netherlands (01/10)

Xavi Simons arrives at Euro 2024 as an integral part of the Dutch setup. Simons shone on loan at RB Leipzig during the 2023-24 campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing 15 assists in a productive campaign in Germany.

The 21-year-old finished last season as the Eredivisie’s top scorer at PSV Eindhoven and is beginning to realize the vast potential he first demonstrated in Barcelona’s academy. A creative and action-packed presence in the final third, Simons scored his first goal for the Netherlands in their 4-0 friendly win over Iceland this week.

Jamal Musiala – Germany (01/10)

It seems like Jamal Musiala has been around forever. Already a four-time Bundesliga title winner with Bayern Munich and 29 caps for the German national team, it’s easy to forget that the midfielder only celebrated his 21st birthday in February.

Musiala’s fluid footwork will be a feature of Germany’s challenge this summer as the host nation seeks to win a record fourth European Championship.

Lamine Yamal – Spain (7/1)

Lamine Yamal will set a new record this summer if – or when – he appears at Euro 2024. The 16-year-old will become the youngest player ever to play in a European Championship, surpassing Kacper Kozłowski, who was 17 years and 246 days old . when he played for Poland at Euro 2020.

Yamal’s rise has been extraordinary and the teenager is already a key figure for the club and the country. He has scored seven goals and provided 10 assists for Barcelona in 2023-24 while making an impressive start for Spain. After becoming La Roja’s youngest debutant and top scorer, Yamal scored six goals (2G and 4A) in seven matches.

Florian Wirtz – Germany (7/1)

Florian Wirtz will want to headline a major tournament in his home country after starring in the Bundesliga season.

The 21-year-old was in excellent form for Bayer Leverkusen, as Die Werkself won their first Bundesliga title without losing a single game. Wirtz scored 11 times and provided 11 assists for Leverkusen in the league alone, including a hat-trick in the title-clinching victory over Werder Bremen.

Ended the 2023-24 campaign with 38 goals and assists in all competitions.

Jude Bellingham – England (3/1)

La Liga, Champions League, European Championship?

Jude Bellingham will be looking to complete a dream debut season at Real Madrid with international honors for England as the Three Lions head into Euro 2024 as favourites. Bellingham’s brilliance this season has seen him named La Liga Player of the Season for 2023-24, as the dynamic driving force of Carlo Ancelotti’s Spanish and European champions.

Gareth Southgate is also expected to release the 20-year-old from handcuffs, which could lead to a devastating tournament in Bellingham.
