MANCHESTER UNITED legend Michael Carrick is turning to a familiar face to become his new assistant manager – his younger brother Graeme.

The 42-year-old Middlesbrough manager could still lose Aaron Danks from his backroom staff to Bayern Munich.

Vincent Kompany briefly worked with the highly regarded Anderlecht coach and now wants to reunite with him after taking charge of the Bundesliga giants.

Boro will demand compensation for Danks’ departure, an amount that has not yet been met, but they have already identified a replacement.

They have made an official approach to Premier League side Newcastle United for Graeme.

And Sun Sport understands that it has received the green light to begin official negotiations for the brothers to join forces at the Riverside.

Graeme is currently Newcastle youth team coach and led the under-18s to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League North academy last season.

Like Michael, he also graduated from the famous Wallsend Boys Club and grew up on Tyneside.

Both were signed as players by West Ham United when they were youngsters, but Graeme was unable to follow in his brother’s footsteps and break into the first team.

However, he began a coaching career that saw him work for the Football Association in a variety of roles for 15 years.

He joined Newcastle in August 2022 as Under-18s head coach but now looks set to move into senior football alongside his brother.

Former England international midfielder Michael played for Tottenham and captained Manchester United, where he won the Champions League and five Premier League titles, before retiring in 2018.

After a brief spell as United’s caretaker boss, he took over at Middlesbrough in October 2022 for his first management role.

Boro were in relegation trouble when they arrived, sitting 21st in the table, but produced an instant transformation and took them into the play-offs.

He followed that up by leading them to the Carabao Cup semi-final last season, although they missed out on the play-offs by four points.

Several Premier League teams have been linked with a swoop on him in recent months, but he ended speculation over his future this month.

He signed a new three-year contract and said: “I’m really happy with it. I’ve always been pretty calm about it.

“I think having that attachment, that trust and that belief within the club is very important.

“We certainly achieved that – that’s what still gives me the great feeling I had when I first walked in the door.

“It seems like a big step as a title, as a statement, but it doesn’t actually change anything about what I do or how I approach it, it just continues what we’re trying to achieve.”

He wasted no time in the transfer market either, snapping up Luke Ayling for free from Leeds following his impressive loan spell in January.

And they have agreed an undisclosed fee with Mainz for 25-year-old striker Delano Burgzorg, subject to international clearance.

The 25-year-old, who has signed a four-year contract, spent last season on loan in the Championship at Huddersfield Town, where he scored seven goals in 33 appearances.
