Dundee United’s newest signing, Vicko Sevelj, “embodies the modern defender”, says manager Jim Goodwin.
The 23-year-old Croatian signs a two-year contract after two seasons with Slovenian side NK Radomlje.
Having joined Hajduk Split’s youth system at the age of 16, Sevelj became a regular in the Croatian second division reserve team and then transferred to FK Sarajevo in 2021.
He spent time on loan at Russians Akron Tolyatti and Radomlje before the Slovenian team made the deal permanent.
Goodwin says he is excited to sign the versatile defender, having “highlighted Vicko’s talent a few months ago” and is keeping an eye on more signings from Eastern Europe.
“He embodies the modern defender – strong in duels and adept at coming out from behind to assess progressive passing options with confidence,” said the United manager.
“Although he is predominantly a central defender, his wide range of attributes allows him to be used in a variety of positions, further underlining his value to the playing group.
“Vicko’s arrival also represents our first foray into the growing Eastern European market, a market we look forward to continuing to explore for more elite-level players this summer and beyond.”
Sevelj says he was aware of United before arriving but was “pleasantly surprised by the size and stature of the club”.
He added: “The passion of our fans is also incredible and I’ve watched so many videos of them showing their support for the team – I can’t wait to experience it for myself.”
