Lineker and Lampard were joined in the studio by Brentford bosses Thomas Frank and Alex Scott.

And the banter flowed naturally as the quartet presented accurate information about the exciting Euro group stage game.

However, Lineker made a gaffe at one point by accidentally insulting Lampard.

The presenter highlighted that there was a fan screen at the back of the BBC’s external studio, which prevented fans from being able to look inside.

Lampard joked that if the screen was removed they would only be able to see the back of his head.

And that’s when Lineker put his foot in it with an ill-timed joke about baldness.

Lineker said: “Over at the Brandenburg Gate we should take down that screen and see all the punters.

“But if they turned off the screen, they wouldn’t be able to watch the game.”

Lampard chimed in: “They would see my head! They wouldn’t show up for that!

Lineker joked: “No, you’re right, no one wants to see the back of your head these days! That’s sure.”

Lampard seemed unable to see the funny side as his smile quickly faded.

Fans certainly found this hilarious, with one saying: “Lampard realized it was a bald joke he sent me.”

Another declared: “This is literally the funniest thing I have ever seen, real tears in my eyes.”

One added: “Gary Lineker just gave Frank Lampard a body on live TV. Lampard’s face is killing me. The smoke.”

Lineker went on to talk about the incident on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football Podcast.

And the host admitted an apology to Lampard was imminent.

Lineker said: “Obviously Frank is a bit emaciated, I’m a bit emaciated and I was actually quite serious about everyone.

“But when it came out, it came out a little wrong. And did you know that Frank does that thing where he smiles and then suddenly doesn’t smile?

“Frank is a lot of fun, he won’t mind. I must admit that when I got back to the hotel I saw this on social media and thought, ‘Oh, you idiot.’

“I felt really bad, I have to apologize. I apologize because it wasn’t deliberate, but I understand how funny it was. These things happen on live TV.”

How fans and pundits reacted to Southgate playing Foden on the left wing

GARETH SOUTHGATE was widely criticized for using Phil Foden after the uninspired Euro 2024 opening game 1-0 against Serbia.

The Premier League Player of the Year had a sublime season at Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in yet another title-winning season.

Foden has often shone brightest as a number 10, but has been allowed to roam freely behind Erling Haaland to cause maximum chaos.

Despite making a stunning 13.2km change in England’s Euro 2024 opener against Serbia, fans and pundits were left frustrated by Foden’s isolation on the left wing.

After the game. Former England star said: “I don’t think Phil Foden played well, he wasn’t involved.”

Micah Richards added: “It makes me sad when I see a player of this quality in and out of games.”

Cesc Fabregas demanded Foden “be more like Jude Bellingham” and “demand” the ball, while Rio Ferdinand claimed the City ace is “allowing” the Real Madrid star to be the “dominant” figure.

Fans, meanwhile, fear Southgate is “turning Foden into Mason Mount” and demand the Three Lions boss finds a way to make him and Bellingham shine together.

SunSport columnist Jack Wilshere reckons Southgate could play BOTH at number 10, with Declan Rice sitting at number 6.

The former Arsenal star said: “When Bellingham gets the ball, even if he just lends it to Foden to get it back, or vice versa, they want to combine and make something happen.

“We have to put them between the lines and receive them in the half-turn, playing forward.

“As I said before the tournament, I believe they can play in the same team, as two number 10s, with Declan Rice as the only player detained – especially in the group stage games.”

England face Denmark in their second Euro 2024 clash on Tuesday, kicking off in Frankfurt at 5pm.
