UEFA investigates alleged racist chants by Serbian fans during England

UEFA has opened an investigation into allegations of racist and discriminatory chants by Serbia fans during Englandthe 1-0 victory in their Euro 2024 debut in Gelsenkirchen.

English players were reportedly targets of racist abuse while Kosovo’s football federation complained to UEFA about flags, chants and banners that contained “political, chauvinist and racist messages against Kosovo”.

UEFA confirmed that an ethics and discipline inspector would conduct an investigation into “alleged discriminatory behavior” by Serbian fans, with the process expected to take a few weeks to complete.

Serbia was also accused of throwing objects into the stadium and displaying a banner that “conveyed a provocative message inappropriate for a sporting event” at the Veltins Arena.

Seven people were arrested after clashes broke out between fans of rival teams England and Serbia, just hours before the teams’ opening game.

O first weekend of Euro 2024 was marked by violence after fans were left bloodied as tables were overturned and glasses broken during carnage outside the Aleppo bar in the city of Gelsenkirchen.

A Gelsenkirchen police spokesman told the BBC that seven Serbian citizens had been detained.

It only arrives a few hours after a shooting in Hamburg who saw a man taken to the hospital. He was shot by police after threatening officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device.

Slovenia have no new injury problems after their opening game, so a similar line-up to the one that started the draw against Denmark is expected.

Benjamin Sesko remains the talisman, with Oblak the invincible goalkeeper and goalscorer Janza, who is likely to maintain his position at left-back.

For Serbia, winger Filip Kostic limped off in the first half of the defeat against England, so he will be a doubt, but there are no other injury problems.

Serbia’s defense, especially Pavlovic, was at times unbalanced in the first half against England and although they recovered well, this could be the area where changes will be made. The likes of Milinkovic-Savic, Vlahovic and Mitrovic remain unbeaten, although Tadic could start against weaker opposition, and Mladenovic impressed during his appearance after replacing Kostic.
