The best and funniest viral moments from yesterday’s EURO 2024

Thursday was another memorable day at EURO 2024, with England flattering to deceive and an absorbing game between Spain and Italy to round off the day.

There were lots of weird and wonderful things happening off the field too. Here are the best parts – let us know in the comments if we missed anything!

Food wars continue

Spain may have got the better of Italy on the pitch, but the Italians think their food is unbeatable and they may well be right.

Alternative match highlights

You won’t find a more perfect summary of that match in Gelsenkirchen than this.

Poor Ricardo Calafiori.

OG, OG, OG, hi, hi, hi

This unfortunate mistake from the Italian defender means the own goal is now the tournament’s top scorer.

Rumors are that Manchester City have submitted a bid of £100 million.

Royal Battle

La Roja’s players were congratulated on their victory by the King of Spain, who couldn’t believe that Lamine Yamal was just 16 years old.

You’ll never come home again

It was a day to remember for England, who squandered a 1-0 lead to draw with Denmark in disappointing fashion.

Danish fans were totally trolled before the game even started.

Fortunately for an English fan, the strength of the German beer means he probably won’t remember the game.

Keys to the city

Scottish fans, on the other hand, were told by the city’s mayor that they were welcome back to Cologne at any time.

The pub bills alone must have provided a huge boost to the local economy.

Gareth Southgate: England manager

How about this for a brilliant example of art imitating life.

If you’ve never seen the 2001 film Mike Bassett: England coachyou should really do something about this.

Duolingo

If you were ever impressed by Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana’s crazy change of accent in the mixed zone the other day, you haven’t seen anything yet.

Peel the old block

And 1992 European Championship winner Peter Schmeichel interviewing his son Kasper after Denmark’s draw with England left football fans of a certain age teary-eyed.

ICYMI, here are the best and funniest viral moments from the tournament so far…

That’s a low blow

This Albanian fan knew exactly where to hit the Italians where it hurts when the two teams met in Dortmund in the first round.

And that joke was copied by this Austrian fan, who provoked his French counterparts in Düsseldorf on Monday.

Culinary exploration

Food has been the theme of the tournament so far. On Wednesday, these Swiss fans enjoyed a beautiful fondue on the steps of Cologne Cathedral, before the game with Scotland. Why not?

German Joshua Kimmich was so hungry on Wednesday that he tried to take a bite out of Manuel Neuer’s head.

Here was an English fan’s reaction to trying German Currywurst for the first time.

Nap time

This England fan must have had too much Currywurst as he fell asleep in the stadium during Sunday’s win over Serbia and woke up alone at 4am!

The masked attacker

Poor Kylian Mbappe has been one of the tournament’s biggest casualties so far, with the France captain breaking his nose during Monday’s encounter with Austria.

The new Real Madrid star quickly took to social media, asking fans for suggestions for a mask he could use to protect his injured conk.

This was easily the best suggestion.

Hi referee, can I have your shirt?

Who knew that even referees have fanboys?

When will we see your like again?

What national anthem does Scotland have, and what a version of it that was.

This Italian commentator loves the anthem so much he couldn’t help but sing along.

Scottish fans have been the undisputed stars of EURO 2024 so far, just like this beautiful moment.

And what a face this Germany fan was, handing out beers to the Scots in Cologne on Wednesday.

But here’s where it’s not a good idea to go up an escalator in the wrong direction, especially after drinking several of those beers.

It’s all so beautiful

Georgia may have lost their first Euro game, but their first goal in that defeat to Türkiye was a historic moment and it was too much for a journalist in the stadium.

And if this Turkish commentator’s reaction to Arda Güler’s stunning goal doesn’t send shivers down your spine, there might be something wrong with you.

It never rains but it pours

That game between Turkey and Georgia was the first matchday, but it almost had to be canceled due to heavy rain. Congratulations to the youth team in Dortmund for their work, especially this guy.

And if you lost that game, you really lost.

The wrong Onana

Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana was understandably unhappy about being mistaken for his namesake André, and this change of accent was crazy.

Education, Education, Education

Lamine Yamal may have lit up Spain’s opening day victory over Croatia, but that doesn’t mean the 16-year-old can skip his homework.

Calm down Cristiano!

Cristiano Ronaldo may have been a little anxious about starting Portugal’s game against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Shaq Attack

Find someone who loves you as much as Swiss Xherdan Shaqiri loves scoring goals in international tournaments.

Baddiel and Skinner eat your heart

English comedian Tim Vine has created a new song that could rival Three Lions… or maybe not.

This Phil Foden corner isn’t so bad.

But our favorite song from England at EURO 2024 is this banger by Sans Beanstalk.

Let them know you’re there

At the time of writing, we have only had one red card in the tournament, but what a red card it was, from Scotland’s Ryan Porteous.

I can’t take a break

This guy spoke to all the Arsenal fans about his reaction to Kieran Tierney’s injury for Scotland on Wednesday night.
