WAYNE ROONEY has revealed he once had a “talk” with Memphis Depay after he turned up to a game wearing a cowboy hat.
The retired player was covering the Netherlands’ clash against France at Euro 2024 when he remembered the moment.
Rooney, 38, played with Depay during his time at Manchester United.
However, the pair clashed when the Dutchman arrived at a reserve match driving a Rolls Royce and wearing a cowboy hat.
Rooney was unhappy with the striker’s appearance and confronted him about it.
Talking about the BBChe said: “First of all, you could never slow down your work rate.
“In training, he worked hard every day to prove his worth.
“More was done than some of the off-field things I talked about.
“One time I was at a reserve game being a bit discreet, and he showed up in a Rolls Royce and a cowboy hat.
“I had to talk to him, so it was Memphis.”

Depay spoke about his time in Manchester, saying he “earned” his success.
Speaking in a documentary following him and his life, the 30-year-old winger said: “My whole life has been turned upside down.
“They talk about the newspaper headlines, me wearing a hat and all that shit.
“They say that in Manchester I failed. But come on, man. I drive a Rolls Royce, this is my life.
“They gave me nothing, I gained everything with both feet. I’m not good, I’m not bad. Just don’t forget to check my past, check my scars.
“I am a lion, I am a king. I have fashion in my blood and only big dreams. I don’t care what people think of me.
“It’s my life and if I’m the black sheep, then it is. I do what I want anyway.”
Depay left Old Trafford in 2017 and rebuilt his career at Lyon.
After four years in France, he moved to Barcelona and, after two seasons, joined Atlético de Madrid in 2023.
