What are the lyrics to Portugal’s national anthem “A Portuguesa”?

Verse 1
Heroes
of the sea, noble people,
Brave Nation, immortal,
Get up again today
The splendor of Portugal
Among the mists of memory.
O Fatherland, feel the voice
Of your egregious grandparents
That will guide you to victory.

Choir:
The weapons! The weapons!
Over land, over sea!
The weapons! The weapons!
Fight for the Fatherland!
Against the cannons march, march!

Verse 2
Unfurl the undefeated flag
In the living light of your sky
Shout to Europe to the entire earth
Portugal did not perish!
Kiss the ground, your jucundo
O ocean roaring with love;
And your winning arm
Gave new worlds to the world!

Choir:
The weapons! The weapons!
Over land, over sea!
The weapons! The weapons!
Fight for the Fatherland!
Against the cannons march, march!

Verse 3
Salute the rising sun
About a trip to come;
Be the echo of a front
The sign of resurfacing.
Rays of this strong dawn
They’re like mother’s kisses
That guard us, sustain us,
Against lucky injuries

Choir:
The weapons! The weapons!
Over land, over sea!
The weapons! The weapons!
Fight for the Fatherland!
Against the cannons march, march!

What are the words to Portugal’s national anthem in English?

Verse 1
Heroes of the sea, noble race,
Brave and immortal nation,
Get up once again
The splendor of Portugal.
Out of the mists of memory,
Oh motherland, we hear the voices
From your great ancestors
This will lead you to victory!

Choir:
For the guns, for the guns
On land and at sea!
For the guns, for the guns
Fight for our Homeland!
To march against enemy weapons!

Verse 2
Unfurl the invincible flag
In the bright light of your sky!
Shout all of Europe and the world
That Portugal did not perish.
Your happy land is kissed
Next to the Ocean that murmurs with love.
And your conquering arm
Gave new worlds to the world!

Choir:
For the guns, for the guns
On land and at sea!
For the guns, for the guns
To fight for our Homeland!
To march against enemy weapons!

Verse 3
We salute the rising sun
In a smiling future:
Let the echo of an insult be
The signal for our revival.
The rays of that powerful dawn
They’re like mother’s kisses
Who protect and support us
Against the insults of fate.

Choir:
For the guns, for the guns
On land and at sea!
For the guns, for the guns
Fight for our Homeland!
To march against enemy weapons!

Who composed the Portuguese national anthem?

In 1890, the British gave the Portuguese an ultimatum regarding their African colonies, igniting the Portuguese nationalist movement.

When news broke that Portugal’s monarch and government had agreed to Britain’s terms, composer Alfredo Keil furiously put pen to paper.

The result was a patriotic protest march and from this came the song ‘Um Português’.

Who is the lyricist of the Portuguese national anthem?

The lyrics for ‘A Portugese’ were written by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça.

He was a Portuguese poet, writer and naval officer.

Henrique was a friend of the composer Alfredo Keil, who wrote the music for the anthem.
