The Dutch fire brigade said several supporters but “fewer than 20” were injured.

The clash scene was treated as a major incident and the match was postponed.

Players ran to help and some fans erected a large metal structure to prevent further injuries.

Some supporters who escaped being hit walked around in a daze.

And red smoke billowed before the game, adding to the confusion as it covered the terraces.

One fan could be seen putting his head in his hands in despair.

Others ran around trying to see how they could help.

Two “trauma helicopters” arrived at the camp as Dutch exit West reported how big the incident had become.
