Alvarez was seen covering his face after falling holding his upper leg.

The West Ham star received treatment on the pitch before being helped by medical staff.

His injury is a huge blow for El Tri, with Alvarez captaining the team in the tournament.

After the match, coach Jaime Lozano explained: “We are going to wait a few days to do some tests and find out what is happening.

“He is extremely important. He is a leader, he understands the game well. He is important on the field and in the dressing room too.

“You hear him talk, he has a way with words and when he talks you listen. This was a hard blow for all of us.”

Mexico will face Venezuela in their next match on Wednesday night before ending their group stage campaign against Ecuador on June 30.

Despite Alvarez’s injury, El Tri beat Jamaica 1-0 thanks to Gerardo Arteaga’s second-half goal.

His performances have seen the Mexican captain emerge as a target for United in recent days.

The Red Devils are considering the possibility of Alvarez replacing Casemiro if he leaves the club.

Erik ten Hag previously worked with Alvarez during three years together at Ajax.
