Steve Clarke hopes lessons have been learned ahead of Scotland’s decisive Group A game against Hungary in Stuttgart at Euro 2024 writes Ronnie Esplin.
The Scots have picked up just one point from their opening two games against Germany and Switzerland, but a win over Hungary would almost certainly see Scotland through to the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time.
Clarke and his team were in the same situation at the postponed Euro 2020 after losing to the Czech Republic and drawing with England, but they fell short in their final game, losing 3-1 to Croatia at Hampden Park.
However, the Scotland manager believes he and his team have used the intervening years wisely.
“We feel good,” Clarke said. “We thought it might be a need to take something from the last group game. We were already in this position in the last tournament, but we hope we can show that we have learned some lessons.”

Euro 2024 reaches the final round of the group stage to decide who will progress to the knockouts. In addition to the top two teams from each of the six groups, the four best third-placed teams will also advance to the round of 16, with the remaining eight nations eliminated from the tournament.
First up is Group A, with Scotland looking to secure a place in the knockout stages of an international tournament for the first time in their history against Hungary. Scotland were beaten by Germany in their opening game before recovering against Switzerland, and a win over Hungary in Stuttgart was needed to guarantee qualification – although an anxious wait may be required even if Steve Clarke’s side manage to get three crucial points.
In the last two editions of the European Championship in which the 24-team format was used, four points were always enough for a third-placed team to advance to the round of 16. While three points have occasionally been enough, it does not guarantee a place in the next round. Two points weren’t enough to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams at Euro 2016 or Euro 2020, but there is a way that could be possible at Euro 2024.

What’s new with the Scottish national team?
Kieran Tierney is out of Euro 2024 after being stretchered off against Switzerland due to a hamstring injury, with the left-back already returning to Arsenal for further assessment. Tierney is likely to be replaced on the left side of the Scotland defense by Scott McKenna unless Steve Clarke decides to change shape and switch to four at the back.
Ryan Porteous remains suspended, but Clarke found a better balance in the team against Switzerland, with Billy Gilmour being moved into midfield, allowing Scott McTominay and John McGinn to advance further. Scotland need to win, so Clarke may be tempted to name a more attacking team, but the forced replacement of McKenna by Tierney may be the only change.
