Sheets were brought in to cover Varga with several teammates, including Dominik Szoboszlai, seen in tears.

Hungary manager Marco Rossi has now confirmed that the striker will miss the rest of Euro 2024 in his post-match interview.

Rossi said: “Barnabás Varga’s life is not in danger.

“He will undergo surgery following a fractured face and will not be available until the end of Euro 2024.”

UEFA showed a wide-angle replay during coverage of Scotland’s 1-0 defeat, but did not show any close-ups of the incident.

The BBC apologized for the clip shown – they use the host country’s feed.

Varga was carried off the field on a stretcher, which Szoboszlai helped carry onto the field as both fans cheered.

He was reportedly conscious and communicating with medical staff on the way to the hospital.

And Gabby Logan confirmed after the game that Varga was stable in a Stuttgart hospital.

Martin Adam came on to replace 29-year-old Varga, who plays for Ferencvaros in his homeland.

The game was paused for five minutes before resuming after a VAR check for a possible penalty was ruled out.

Former Scotland international Pat Nevin insisted Gunn had every right to fetch the ball.

Frustrated Scotland fans LEAVE Glasgow fanzone due to technical problems

He told BBC 5 Live: “We’ve seen this before, if a goalkeeper goes out and doesn’t catch the ball but catches a player, it’s a foul.

“I actually think Angus Gunn got the ball a little bit there.”

Hungary scored through Kevin Csoboth in the 100th minute after a lightning counter-attack to break Scottish hearts and see the Tartan Army eliminated from the Euros.

The team will now face an anxious wait to see if three points will be enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Scotland pressed hard late and could have put the ball in the net through a goalmouth scramble before being caught late.

The Scots felt they should have been awarded a penalty for a foul on Willi Orban’s Stuart Armstong and BBC commentator Alan Shearer agreed.

He said: “Clear penalty for me. Orban takes him down, with his right knee on his left calf, a clear penalty, of course.”

Asked about the incident, Gunn said: “It was a bit confusing.

“I had to come and I thought I did well, it was a little painful, I hope the guy is okay.”

He added: “To be honest, it’s difficult to talk about. I thought everyone did their best.

“The goal at the end was because we were going for it, but I think the effort we put in today showed the fans and the country what this means for us.

“They were able to counterattack at the end and it was a bad punch because I thought we defended really well for most of the game.”
