BARNABAS VARGA has released his first update on his condition in hospital following a sickening collision that overshadowed Hungary’s Euro 2024 game with Scotland.
The striker was transported on a stretcher after an aerial challenge with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn, in the second half of the Group A final.
And today he shared an Instagram post from his wife Laura Skrapits.
She shared a photo of herself holding Varga’s hand next to the bed.
Her post was captioned: “Thank you for your kind and supportive messages. Barni overcame the surgery.
“A little rest awaits him, but he’ll be fine!”
Hungary’s teammates rallied to protect the Ferencvaros star as he was treated on the pitch for several minutes.
Players on both sides were clearly concerned about his condition.
It was later revealed that the 29-year-old had fractured a cheekbone, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament and his father, Andras, revealed that he had undergone surgery.
After Kevin Csoboth scored the only goal in the 10th minute of stoppage time, it was immediately obvious where the Hungarian players’ thoughts were.
They wore shirts with Varga’s name on them as they walked around in good spirits despite the victory.
Captain Dominik Szoboszlai – Liverpool’s midfielder – led the way.
And even though he raised his arms to greet the fans, the 23-year-old’s expression showed that he was reflecting their concern for Varga.
The 13-cap frontman was reportedly conscious and able to communicate with doctors who took him to hospital.
Varga was carried out on a stretcher and managed to communicate with medical staff on his way to a hospital in Stuttgart.
The Hungarian camp and Ferencvaros issued statements saying he was conscious and in a “stable” condition.

His club also promised to update concerned fans “immediately” when they receive further news.
Hungary manager Marco Rossi told BBC Sport on Sunday night: “Varga is fine.
“Unfortunately he will undergo surgery because he suffered a fracture.
“We’ll see, if we progress in the tournament, he certainly won’t be with us.”
Rossi also revealed his players’ fears at the time of the incident.
He said: “What I heard from the players was that Barney seemed unconscious.
“Everyone was very worried about his condition and worried because the doctors arrived a little late. They probably didn’t realize it was a dangerous situation.
“We can now say that Barney is not at any risk.
“He will probably undergo surgery in the next few hours because he suffered a fracture here (on his cheek), but he is healthy.”
The man of the match, Roland Sallai, also spoke of the “terrible moment”.
He said: “He will have to have a difficult operation, a small operation, but we keep our fingers crossed that he can return.
“Naturally it was a terrible incident. Of course we fought for him in the remaining minutes and this victory is dedicated to him.”
Varga, who played all his club football in his home country and Austria, was Hungary’s top scorer with four goals in Euro qualifying.
He started all three group stage matches in Germany this month.
And he scored the first of only two goals so far.
Varga gave the Hungarians brief hope in their opening game, a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland.
He finished perfectly off a sublime pass from Szoboszlai as they trailed 2-0.
Then came a 2-0 defeat to Germany and the 1-0 defeat against Scotland who saw his terrible accident.
