Copa América Group D finally began with the conclusion of the first round on Monday night. Colombia faced Paraguay, while Brazil must face Costa Rica. Here’s what’s happened so far.
Colombia 2-1 Paraguay
Top scorers: Munoz 32′; Lerma 42′; Enciso 69′
Colombia fended off a late attempt to take all three points against Paraguay early in Group D.
Néstor Lorenzo was rampant early on, putting the Paraguayan rearguard under immense pressure from the opening whistle.
They were finally rewarded for their efforts beyond the half-hour mark when Daniel Muñoz opened the scoring to bring down the NRG Stadium roof.
They backed up the goal with another before half-time, when Jefferson Lerma was left unmarked in the box to score and increase the lead.
Although it looked like Colombia would cross the finish line, Paraguay pulled one back through Julio Enciso, forcing the leaders to come out of their shell once again.
A late Colombia penalty was rejected after a VAR check, but Paraguay were unable to capitalize on their second chance to find an equalizer.
