A former CHELSEA wonderkid scored the “unluckiest own goal ever” last night – but a new Blues teenage sensation made Copa America history moments later.

Ecuador beat Jamaica 3-1 to secure their first victory in the tournament since 2016.

They took the lead in the 13th minute, courtesy of an OG from Las Vegas’ Kasey Palmer in first-half stoppage time.

Then Kendry Paez, who will join Chelsea next summer when he turns 18, doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

Midfielder Paez, aged 17 years and 53 days, is now the youngest scorer in the Copa América this century.

West Ham striker Michail Antonio pulled one back for Jamaica shortly after the break.

But Alan Minda scored in the final seconds to secure three points in Group B.

However, it wasn’t the result that got most people talking afterward, and unfortunately for Palmer, it was the result that went viral.

The 27-year-old Coventry City midfielder, who represented England at youth level before switching to the Reggae Boys in 2021, scored one of the most “unlucky” own goals.

Ecuador’s Piero Hincapie received the ball wide on the left and headed towards the corner flag.

Palmer came flying to block his cross but the ball deflected off him as he slid and began to take a wicked deflection.

This sent the ball spinning towards the top corner, over Jamaican goalkeeper Jahmali Waite.

A look at Chelsea’s forgotten wonderkids

“I feel sorry for Kasey Palmer here,” one viewer wrote.

Another said: “It’s an absolute one-goal wonder against this.”

A fellow fan commented: “Genuinely the unluckiest own goal I’ve ever seen!”

A fourth posted on X: “Just saw the unluckiest own goal of my life, with Kasey Palmer being the culprit.”

Palmer moved into Chelsea’s academy as a youngster from Charlton and won the FA Youth Cup and Uefa Youth League twice whilst at the Blues.

He ventured into several loan spells with the likes of Huddersfield, Derby, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City before joining the Robins permanently in 2019.

He spent three years at Ashton Gate, one of which included a season-long loan at Swansea City.

Palmer then moved to Coventry in 2022 and helped them reach the Championship play-off final in his first year.

He and his Jamaica teammates remain winless after losing their first game 1-0 to Mexico and finishing bottom of their group.

The Mexicans later suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to group leaders Venezuela, who opened the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Ecuador.
