St Johnstone manager Craig Levein spoke ahead of the club’s pre-season trip north to face Nairn County and Huntly this weekend. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Wants to see how young goalkeepers Josh Rae, Ross Sinclair and Craig Hepburn perform in pre-season “before making a final decision on whether we want a more experienced goalkeeper”

  • Uche Ikpeazu will miss the first three months of the season after suffering a domestic accident that required him to undergo knee surgery.

  • Josh McPake “lost himself a bit” after his early days at Rangers, but Levein feels “there’s obviously talent there, it’s just a question of whether he’s got the determination and motivation to make his career as good as it can be.”

  • The club are looking to sign more central defenders in the coming weeks following the addition of Jack Sanders to the squad.

  • He is pleased with what he has seen from pre-season so far and feels that “if you miss pre-season it is always difficult to catch up”.

  • In preseason games, he “will play one team for an hour on Friday, then a new team for the last half hour and then reverse on Saturday.

  • He will sign young players to reinforce the squad this weekend in case of injuries, but ‘hopefully I won’t have to use them’.
