A council has been criticized for washing red and white painted St George’s flags to support the Three Lions at two roundabouts after spray-painting them.
Patriotic supporters painted the emblems in Spondon, Derby, but were horrified when workers moved in to wipe them down.
Local Conservative councilor Jerry Pearce said: “People have expressed their patriotism by painting these roundabouts.
“If you’re going to eliminate them, do it at the end of the tournament.
“Why outrage people?”
Residents claimed that the municipality took action for road safety reasons because the flags could distract drivers.
One said: “I don’t believe in the excuse of distracting drivers.
“Flags are hanging from houses everywhere, but they have not been instructed to remove them.”
A spokesperson for Derby City Council said: “We are supporting the England team at the Euros like many others.
“But we ask people not to use graffiti to show their support.
“No matter how well-intentioned graffiti is, it is ultimately vandalism.
“As a council, we are responsible for keeping the city clean and tidy.”
